North Carolina: A Brief History

This class will take a look at the old North Carolina state through a study of the times as witnessed by its leaders. The first meeting will be two hours and will be lecture-style with discussion. The four additional meetings will consist of a lecture from 11am until noon, a break for lunch, and then a site visit from 1pm to 3pm. Participants are responsible for their own lunch, site fees and transportation to the sites. Site fees will be less than $25 total. It is recommended that you read Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by North Carolina native, Harriet Ann Jacobs, before the visit to Latta Plantation. The book is available on Session 1: Introductory meeting Session 2: Meeting & site visit to the Museum of the Waxhaws Session 3: Meeting & site visit to the James K. Polk House (Polk's birthplace) Session 4: Meeting & site visit to Latta Plantation Session 5: Meeting and site visit to the Levine Museum of the New South Saturdays, May 11, 18, June 1, 8, 15 (skip Memorial Day Weekend) Session 1: 1pm - 3pm Sessions 2-5: 11am - noon - lecture, break for lunch, 1pm-3pm - site visit
